Furniture layout planner

Moving a sofa three times to see where it looks best is hard on backs and floors. With RoomFitter you can try the layout on screen first: drag pieces into place, rotate them by 90 degrees, and nudge them an inch at a time with the arrow keys.

Drag pieces to move them. Select a piece and use arrow keys to nudge (Shift for bigger steps), R to rotate, Delete to remove.

        Rug size for this room

Saved you some time? Leave a tip, entirely optional.

Every piece shows its real size, the plan shows a one-foot or 50 cm grid, and the checks underneath tell you about overlaps and narrow paths, so the layout you choose will actually work when the furniture arrives.

        How the checks work

Every piece is a rectangle measured in real units. RoomFitter reports three kinds of problem. A piece that crosses a wall is flagged as sticking out of the room. Two solid pieces that share any floor space overlap. And two pieces that are close but not touching are checked against the walkway width you choose: 24, 30 or 36 inches (61, 76 or 91 cm). The gap is measured edge to edge, or corner to corner for pieces that sit diagonally from each other. Rugs are drawn dashed and ignored by these checks, because furniture is meant to stand on them.

The room’s floor area and the share covered by furniture appear above the plan. Most comfortable rooms have between a third and a half of the floor covered; above about 60% a room starts to feel crowded.

        The door and hallway test

A sofa goes through a doorway lengthwise, so what matters is its cross-section: depth and height. If the smaller of the two is narrower than the door opening and the other is shorter than the door height, it fits on its back or side. If not, tilting it back can work when the diagonal depth is narrower than the door. For a hallway turn, RoomFitter uses the classic moving-sofa geometry: it finds the longest object of the sofa’s thickness that can swing round a right angle from the hallway width into the door width. A small safety margin is subtracted from the door size because hands, blankets and door stops take space.

        Frequently asked questions

What sizes are the standard pieces?

Typical US sizes, such as an 84 × 38 inch sofa, a 60 × 80 inch queen bed and a 48 × 24 inch coffee table. Change any of them to match your own furniture.

Can I save or share the plan?

The plan saves automatically in this browser. Download SVG gives you an image to keep or send, and Print makes a paper copy.

        Do rugs count as overlaps?

No. Rugs sit under furniture, so they are drawn dashed and left out of overlap and walkway checks.

        Is RoomFitter free?

Yes. The room planner, door fit checker and rug calculator are free with no account.

        Is my floor plan uploaded?

No. Your room and furniture are saved only in this browser on this device.
